Sports Digest: DHS Swimmers Dunk Giants, Basketball Teams Lose

Deerfield High School swim team wins two of three relays to best District 113 rival. Boys' and Girls' basketball teams fall to Maine West.

Warriors’ Star Performers:             Alec Barry, Danny Booker, Joey Barr and Alex Howard joined forces to win the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:34.05). Barry, Booker and Howard then joined forces with Ryan Smith to take the 400 freestyle relay (3:25.67). Howard was also a winner in the 50 (23.5) and 100 freestyles (50.71). Barr added a victory in the 200 freestyle (1:54.93) and a second in the 500 freestyle (5:11.11) while Smith did the same with a win in the 100 butterfly (56.48) and runner up honors in the 100 backstroke (1:00.29). Daniel Perlovsky captured the 100 breaststroke (1:06.84) and was second in the 200 individual medley (2:11.22). Ryan Church was the top diver with 231.3 points.

Other Notable Warrior Performances:       Barry took second in the 50 freestyle (23.53) and third in the 100 (52.11). Heath Ogawa was second in diving (179.7) while third place finishes went to Booker in the 200 freestyle (2:00.53), Patrick Abrahams in the 100 butterfly (59.04) and Benji Perez in the 100 backstroke (1:02.12).

Who’s Next:   The Warriors compete in the Hersey Invitational at 9 a.m. today. 

Boys’ Basketball 

The Final Score:  Maine West 53, Deerfield 46 

Who’s Next:   The Warriors travel to Glenbrook North at 7:30 p.m. Friday. 

The Bottom Line:      A 20-6 fourth quarter surge by Maine West wiped out a 40-33 Deerfield lead at the end of three periods. The Warriors held a 12-11 edge at the end of the first quarter and built it to 29-19 at intermission. 

Girls’ Basketball 

The Final Score:  Maine West 53, Deerfield 36 

Who’s Next:   The Warriors travel to Glenbrook North at 6 p.m. Friday. 

The Bottom Line:      An 18-point third quarter Maine West run coupled with only two points from Deerfield put the game away. Deerfield jumped out to a 13-11 lead after one quarter but Maine West battled back to take a 28-25 halftime lead.
