Sports Digest: DHS Wrestlers Shine Against State’s Best

In gymnastics, Deerfield High School's Christine Stitcher took three medals against some of Illinois's top performers.

The Final Score:        Deerfield 30, Libertyville 26; Deerfield 32, Barrington 30; Cary Grove 31, Deerfield 19.

Warriors Star Performers:  Jim Kirby (195) won all three matches by pinning each opponent while freshman Andrew Mehrholz (106) took three bouts as well. 

Other Notable Warrior Performances:       Chase Hanusa (182), Colton Emmerich (170), Tom Bonadies (160), Ari Sapinsley (152), Brian Spinello (126) and Jordan Lieberman (113) were victorious in two of three matches while Brady Glantz (138) earned one win.

Who’s Next:   The Warriors host a quadrangular meet at 10 a.m. Saturday against Lake Zurich, Loyola Academy and Wauconda. 

The Bottom Line:      Four of the top 25 teams in Illinois got together for this quadrangular meet at Barrington. Deerfield was the lowest ranked and came away defeating two of the three higher rated squads. With wrestlers from each school grappling with an opponent from the other three, the Warriors topped No. 6 Libertyville and No. 16 Barrington. 

Gymnastics 

The Final Score:        1. Carmel 144.925, 2. Lake Forest 143.8, 3. Schaumberg 139.85, 4. Deerfield 134.575. 

Warriors Star Performer:    Christine Stitcher took second on the balance beam (9.5), fourth in floor exercise (9.4) and sixth all around (9.1375). 

Who’s Next:   The Warriors travel to Maine East at 5:45 p.m. Thursday. 

The Bottom Line:      The gymnasts were competing against the state’s best as well in a quadrangular against three-time defending champion Carmel and perennial powers Lake Forest—second two years ago and fifth last season—and Schaumberg.
