Sports Digest: DHS Wrestlers Win League Title, Basketball Teams Split

Deerfield High School's wrestling team clinched its fifth consecutive conference championship. Girls' basketball team tops Niles North while Vikings defeat boys.

Warriors Star Performers:  Andrew Mehrholz (106), Jordan Lieberman (113), Brian Spinello (126), Jim Kirby (195) and JJ Nawrot pinned their foes. 

Other Notable Warrior Performances:       Joey Bloom (120), Brady Glantz (138), Brian McCann (145), Ari Sapinsley (160), Chase Hanusa (182) and Patrick Johnson contributed with victories by decision.

Who’s Next:   The Warriors compete in a Quadrangular meet at 9 a.m. today at Stevenson High School. 

The Bottom Line:      Deerfield improved its dual meet record to 21-2 for the season and completed the Central Suburban League North Division season with a 5-0 mark. The junior varsity topped Maine East, 69-12, and the freshmen won, 63-18. 

Girls’ Basketball 

The Final Score:        Deerfield 43, Niles North 19 

Warriors Star Performers:  Haley Greer scored 11 points, stole the ball twice, grabbed two rebounds and had an assist. Monica Fishbein added eight tallies, had eight rebounds, blocked two shots, had two steal and an assist. 

Other Notable Warrior Performances:       Emelia Karkazis hauled down 10 rebounds, chipped in five points and had a pair of steals. Margot Sylvan contributed four points, four steals and two rebounds.

Who’s Next:   The Warriors entertain Buffalo Grove at 6:30 p.m. Monday. 

The Bottom Line:      Deerfield held the Vikings to a three points in the second and third quarters while scoring 27 to put the game on cruise control. After going ahead 11-6 at the end of the first period, the Warriors took a 22-8 lead into the intermission. The victory was Deerfield’s second in a row raising its record to 7-13 and 4-2 in the Central Suburban League North Division. 

Boys’ Basketball 

The Final Score:        Niles North 67, Deerfield 55 

Warriors Star Performers:  Michael Alfieri scored 18 points, took down six rebounds, handed out three assists and blocked a pair of shots. Eric Porter added 17 points and two rebounds. 

Who’s Next:   The Warriors travel to Warren at 6:30 p.m. today. 

The Bottom Line:      A strong second half could not overcome a slow Warrior start. The Vikings charged out to a 20-11 lead after the first quarter and led 30-20 at halftime. Deerfield narrowed the gap by a point in the third period before Niles North added to their margin in the final quarter.
