Sports Digest: Warrior Volleyball Team Takes Second at County

Tennis team wins quad, soccer team tops St. Ignatius and badminton players earn fourth of 16 at New Trier.

Volleyball 

The Final Score:        Deerfield took second in the Lake County Meet. The Warriors defeated Lake Forest, 25-18, 25-21; Libertyville, 25-16, 25-18; Warren 16-25, 26-24; 25-18 and Barrington 25-23, 28-16 before losing to Stevenson, 25-19, 25-10.

Warriors Star Performers:   Jordan Fine dished out 101 assists as well as contributing 26 digs, seven kills, three aces and two blocks. Zach Hara logged 35 kills, 23 digs, a pair of aces and 1.5 blocks while John Harlan contributed 34 kills, 10 digs, five blocks and four aces. 

Other Notable Warrior Performances:       Kenison Ready had 19 kills, nine digs and a pair of blocks while Eli Schmidt chipped in 15 kills, 14 digs, a pair of aces and two blocks. Jake Brody contributed 30 digs and two aces.

Who’s Next:   The Warriors travel to Maine East at 6 p.m. today. 

The Bottom Line:      Deerfield advanced through Friday’s pool play with wins over Lake -Forest, Libertyville and Warren to move into the semifinals where the Warriors stopped top-seeded Barrington before falling to Stevenson in the title game. “It was great to see the guys battle it out and close out a couple of tough matches over the weekend,” Coach Eugene Chung said. The team is 8-1 for the season.

Tennis 

The Final Score:        Deerfield 4, Lake Forest 3; Deerfield 5, Stevenson 2; Deerfield 5, Fremd 2. 

Warriors Star Performers:              Jack Kasbeer won all three of his singles matches while the doubles team of Lee Ratner and Zach Keeshin did the same.

Other Notable Warrior Performances:       Earning a pair of victories for Deerfield were Toby Ma and Tim Klabjan in singles along with the doubles duos of George Vanderkloot and Bryan Rosenberg plus Andrew Pekin and Chris Casati. 

Who’s Next:   The Warriors entertain New Trier at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. 

The Bottom Line:      Deerfield topped all three squads in its quadrangular to take the team title. 

Badminton 

The Final Score:        1. Downers Grove North 39, 2. Fremd 38, 3. New Trier 37, 4. Deerfield 27, 5. Hinsdale South 22, 6. Lockport, Lyons 21, 8. Hersey16, 9. Palatine 13, 10. Maine South 10, 11. Andrew 8, 12. Aurora West 6, 13. Lincoln-Way Central 5, 14. Evanston, Palatine, Wheaton-Warrenville South 3. 

Warriors Star Performers:   The doubles teams of Nicki Flynn and Marissa Levy (No. 3) along with Laura Holzman and Lauren Supngen (No. 4) won championships. 

Other Notable Warrior Performances:       Katie Frankel and Ally Kolpas placed third in No. 1 doubles. Advancing to bracket play in singles were Geri Soren and Sam Merkin. 

Who’s Next:   The Warriors entertain Maine East at 4:30 p.m. today. 

Soccer 

The Final Score:        Deerfield 2, St. Ignatius 0 

Warriors Star Performers:   Just about everybody had a hand in the victory as Bailey Bradford had 15 saves for another shutout. Emily Kellow and Logan Just scored the goals and Amanda Imyak, Sarah Hehemann and Jesse Holloway had assists. Maddy Otto, Haley Greet, Claire Mulert, JoElla Guagliardo and Holloway made defensive contributions, according to Coach Rich Grady. 

Who’s Next:   The Warriors entertain Glenbrook North at 8 p.m. Tuesday. 

The Bottom Line:      Kellow put Deerfield on the board in the 15th minute and Just gave it a two-goal lead almost an hour into the contest. The Warriors are 7-3 for the season.
