Sports Digest: Warriors Shine in League Track Meet, Soccer Team Wins Opener

Gold, Dorfman and Stitcher take individual Central Suburban League title.

Three Deerfield High School athletes won conference track and field championships Thursday and Friday at their respective Central Suburban League Meets while the soccer team opened its season Friday with a 5-2 win over Vernon Hills. 

Summaries of the Central Suburban League boys’ meet at Niles West and soccer game Friday as well as the girls’ conference competition Thursday at Highland Park are below.

Boys’ Track 

The Final Score:        1. Niles North 134, 2. Highland Park 116, 3. Deerfield 85.5, 4. Glenbrook North 75, 5. Maine East 49.5, 6. Maine West 35.

Warriors Star Performers:              . Abosch, Farhi, Nash and Patrick Brunk combined to take third in the 4x400 relay. Earning points in multiple events were Chris Douglas with a third in the 55 high and low hurdles, Brett Freedberg earning third in the pole vault and 50 along with Matt Pigott who took fourth in the high jump and triple jump.

Other Notable Warrior Performances:       Other third place finishes went to Sam Modro (long jump) and Dominick Dibenedetto (shot put). Earning fourth place medals were Brunk (800), Connor Oriot (long jump) and Matt Gibson (pole vault). Garrett Ram was fifth in the triple jump while Alex Borysczuk placed fifth in the shot put. 

Who’s Next:   The Warriors open the outdoor season at 4:30 p.m. April 3 when they entertain Maine South. 

March 14 

Girls’ Track 

The Final Score:        1. Highland Park 158, 2. Deerfield 126, 3. Glenbrook North 66, 4. Niles North 58, 5. Maine East 34, 6. Maine West 20. 

Warriors Star Performers:              Hayley Dorfman won the high jump, finished second in the 50-meter dash and the 200 while placing third in the 400. Christine Stitcher took the pole vault championship and earned runner up honors in the 50 high hurdles.

Other Notable Warrior Performances:       Second place honors went to Jordyn Jensen (3,200) and Hadley Lloyd (800) along with the 4-lap relay team of Jessica Swill, Penelope Danos, Phoebe Block and Sarah Kirby, the 1600 quartet of Block, Kate Henry, Hadley Lloyd, and Kirby and 3,200 relay squad of Henry, Brittany Silvers, Shayna Fertig, and Abbey Osborne.

Earning third place medals were Danos (50), Elizabeth Zwart (800) and Grace Joseph (200). 

Who’s Next:   The Warriors open the outdoor season against Whitney Young and Maine East at 4:30 p.m. April 1 at Maine East. 

March 15 

Soccer 

The Final Score:        Deerfield 5, Vernon Hills 2 

Warriors Star Performer:    Margot Sylvan scored two goals and had an assist while Jesse Holloway added three assists.

Other Notable Warrior Performances:       Emily Kellow contributed a goal and an assist while Logan Just and Samara Haas chipped in goals. Amanda Imyak and Zoe Levin added assists. 

Who’s Next:   The Warriors entertain Lane Tech at 4:30 p.m. Monday. 

The Bottom Line:      Deerfield scored two minutes into the game with Just’s goal and never trailed. The Cougars tied the game, 1-1, five minutes later until Kellow put the Warriors in the lead for good. Sylvan gave her team a 3-1 cushion before Vernon Hills made it 3-2 a little later. After that, scores by Sylvan and Haas put the contest out of reach. This was Deerfield’s first game of the year.
