Thursday is a big day for Deerfield’s Ben Polonsky: his first day of kindergarten. So far, so good, according to his mom. He’s already met his teacher at through a “meet and greet” day on Tuesday, and his astronaut backpack has been located and purchased.
Ben said he wants to be an astronaut when he grows up. Or maybe a road construction worker, dentist or musician (he likes the saxophone). He hasn’t decided quite yet.
Whether the first day of kindergarten is a bigger event for the attending 5-year-olds or their parents remains an open question. Ben’s mom, Amy, said her one main wish for him on Thursday is “that he’s happy and feels at ease.” Ben is the oldest of two kids.
Ben likes to tell stories and draw, and he and his mom put a book together that predicts what the school day will be like, complete with drawings. He plans to show his teacher, Ms. Pappas, his book on the first day of school.
Ben’s mom noted that his preschool hours were nearly identical to his kindergarten schedule, but that this is another story. “Emotionally, it’s very different,” she said.
Ben plans to wear a new red shirt with a button-down collar, and his favorite pair of brown sandals. But his biggest fashion statement among his peers will probably still be the blue and orange astronaut backpack.
Most Kipling students returned to school Wednesday, with kindergarteners joining them Thursday.
