Warrior Miscues Enable Waukegan Win

Deerfield football team shows sparks of efficiency but penalties and a costly fumble stifle opportunity.

The Final Score:  Waukegan 14, Deerfield 7 

Warriors’ Star Performers:             Jake Balder scored Deerfield’s touchdown and made a tackle for loss on defense at a key moment. Brian McCann notched a pair of sacks and a tackle for loss to help stifle Bulldog drives.            .

Other Notable Warrior Performances:       Louis Levine had a sack and tackle for los to pin Waukegan forcing a punt to give the Deerfield offense an opportunity. Colton Emmerich and Michael Maki also sacked the Bulldog quarterback. Alec Frank produced 37 of the Warriors 73 yards on an offensive drive that ended in the Waukegan seven-yard line with a fumble.

Who’s Next:   The Warriors travel to Glenbrook North at 7 p.m. Sept. 21. 

The Bottom Line:      After a sluggish start without any scoring, the Deerfield defense stiffened forcing the Bulldog to punt from deep in their own end zone. The Warriors got the ball on the Waukegan 23 with 9:22 remaining in the first half. Frank and quarterback Matt Kollada moved the ball to the six before Balder took it in for a touchdown.

Waukegan took an 8-7 lead on a touchdown and two-point conversion with 5:28 remaining in the third quarter. Deerfield appeared to be responding with a 73-yard drive of its own to regain the lead but it ended with a fumble on the seven-yard line. The Warriors had other chances but were unable to put any more points on the board.
