Warrior Wrestlers Win CSL Crossover Title

Swimmers edge Highland Park, boys' basketball team falls to Glenbrook North.

Warriors Top Performers:   (220), Jack Eisman, Sam Tortorella (132), Brian McCann (138), Lenny Bloom (145), Tyler Pohn (170) and James Kirby (195) each won two matches for Deerfield. 

Other Notable Warrior Performances:       Other Deerfield winners for the night were J.J. Nawrot (285), Jordan Lieberman (106), Keven Hoogheem (113), Doran Zimmerman (152), Colton Emmerich (160) and Zach Perbohner (182).

Who’s Next:   The Warriors compete in a triangular meet at 9 a.m. today at Glenbard West. 

The Bottom Line:      After finishing just behind the Trevians at the Central Suburban League meet a week ago, Deerfield outpointed New Trier in the dual meet portion of the league crossover competition. With the wins over the Trevians and Hawks, the Warriors are now 22-2 in dual meet competition. 

Swimming 

Jan 27 

The Final Score:        Deerfield 93, Highland Park 91 

Warriors Star Performers:  won the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.43) and the 100 backstroke (55.72) and teamed with Alex Howard, Mark Stern and Chris Roberts to take the 400 freestyle relay (3:29.2). Sean Scarry won diving (212.95). Stern won the 100 butterfly (55.37) and turned around to place fourth in the 500 freestyle (5:28.87) a few events later. 

Other Notable Warrior Performances:       Daniel Perlovsky finished second in the 200 individual medley (2:13.93) and the 100 breaststroke (1:09.45). Roberts contributed a second place finish in the 50 freestyle (22.73) and the 100 freestyle (50.8). Ryan Church was runner up in diving (203.25) while Joey Barr grabbed second in the 500 freestyle (5:14.55).

Who’s Next:   The Warriors travel to Maine East at 5 p.m. Friday. 

The Bottom Line:      Deerfield put forth a solid team effort with a lot of second and third place finishes to narrowly outpoint the Giants. Many of the athletes on both teams knew each other well from early training in the Coho Swim Club, according to Deerfield Coach John Sullivan. 

Boys’ Basketball 

Jan. 27 

The Final Score:        Glenbrook North 68, Deerfield 49 

Warriors Star Performers:  led Deerfield with 17 points. 

Other Notable Warrior Performances:       Tony Shapiro chipped in nine for Deerfield while Alex Sacks added six.

Who’s Next:   The Warriors entertain Maine East at 7:30 p.m. Friday. 

The Bottom Line:      The Warriors stayed close early but with the game tied 10-10, the Spartans outscored Deerfield 15-3 to take a controlling 25-13 lead. Deerfield closed to 35-22 at the intermission but could not get closer in the second half. The Warriors are now 8-10 for the season and 3-4 in the Central Suburban League North Division.
