Warriors Have a Field Day With Highland Park

Tennis and volleyball teams win while soccer squad ties Giants. Baseball team tops Maine East.

Winning is always a good thing in sports and when it comes against an arch rival it is even better. 

Deerfield High School’s tennis team blanked the Giants, 7-0, the volleyballers won in three sets as both squads continued their winning ways as the soccer team finished in a 1-1 tie with the Giants to keep their league title hopes alive.

Tennis 

The Final Score:        Deerfield 7, Highland Park 0

Warriors Star Performers:   The entire team—Toby Ma, Jack Kasbeer, Tim Klabjan, Harrison Crist, Noah Rosenblat, George Vanderkloot, Andrew Pekin, Sam Sylvan, Lee Ratner, Chris Casati and Jared Gupta—as all athletes won their matches. 

Who’s Next:   The Warriors travel to Glenbrook North at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. 

The Bottom Line:      Deerfield won every match in straight sets dropping only 17 games in seven matches. Ma, Kasbeer and Klabjan won their singles contests. The doubles teams of Crist and Rosenblat, Vanderkloot and Pekin, Sylvan and Ratner along with Casati and Gupta were victors. 

Volleyball 

The Final Score:        Deerfield defeated Highland Park, 20-25, 25-17, 25-19. 

Warriors Star Performers:   Zach Hara scored on 17 kills and had seven digs while John Harlan added 16 kills, seven digs and an ace. Jordan Fine set the table with 43 assists along with 10 digs. 

Other Notable Warrior Performances:       Eric Slepian notched six kills and a pair of digs as Kenison Ready recorded five kills and three digs. Eli Schmidt chipped in with four kills, four digs and two aces, Jake Brody had 12 digs and Adam Nadler added 11. 

Who’s Next:   The Warriors travel to Maine East at 6 p.m. Thursday. 

The Bottom Line:      Deerfield improved its record to 16-3 for the season and 6-1 in the Central Suburban League North Division. 

Soccer 

The Final Score:        Deerfield 1, Highland Park 1 

Warriors Star Performers:  Emily Kellow scored the team’s goal while Bailey Bradford collected nine saves holding the Giants to a lone tally.

Other Notable Warrior Performances:       Trishie Schweinfurth had an assist while Jordyn Winston, Claire Mulert, Maddy Otto and Jesse Holloway provided solid defense, according to Coach Rich Grady.

Who’s Next:   The Warriors travel to Maine West at 7 p.m. Thursday. 

The Bottom Line:      After Highland Park scored 15 minutes into the game, Deerfield did not tie it until the 59th minute when Schweinfurth passed to Holloway whose shot just missed before Schweinfurth got the ball and passed to Kellow for the score. A victory Thursday at Maine West will give the Warriors their second straight Central Suburban League North Division title. 

Baseball 

The Final Score:        Deerfield 16, Maine East 5 

Warriors Star Performer:    Andrew Fisher had a perfect day at the plate going 4 – for – 4 with a double.

Other Notable Warrior Performances:       Jared Rubin collected four hits in five at bats including a double while Ben Browdy had two home runs and a double in his five trips to the plate.  Paul DeLucia was the winning pitcher for the third time this season.

Who’s Next:   The Warriors entertain Maine West at 4:45 p.m. today.
