Sports Digest: Warriors Have a Win Fest

Deerfield High School boys' and girls' basketball teams down Maine East while swim team dunks Maine West.

Boys’ Basketball

The Final Score:         Deerfield 61, Maine East 49

Warriors Star Performers:    Eric Porter scored 22 points while Michael Alfieri had a double double. Porter hit 69 percent of his shots from the field as well as two rebounds, an assist and a steal. Alfieri drained 13 points and hauled down 10 rebounds along with three assists and a steal.

Other Notable Warrior Performance:       Anthony Shapiro chipped in with 14 points on 71 percent shooting. He had four rebounds and a steal.

Who’s Next:   The Warriors travel to Conant at 5 p.m. today.

The Bottom Line:     Deerfield took control from the outset and fended off a light third-quarter surge by Maine East. The Warriors jumped out to a 17-11 lead at the end of a quarter and built the margin to 38-24 by halftime. After Maine East closed the gap by five points in the third period, Deerfield outpointed their opponent, 18-15, in the last quarter. 

Girls’ Basketball

The Final Score:          Deerfield 63, Maine East 37,

Warriors Star Performers:    and Kathryn Hoffman all reached double figures. Greer poured in 16 points and contributed three assists, a pair of rebounds and a steal while Hoffman had 13 points as well as six rebounds, three steals and an assist. Sylvan also hit 13 tallies along with three rebounds, two steals and an assist.

Other Notable Warrior Performances:       Sarah Ginn grabbed 10 rebounds along with scoring two points, dishing out three assists and stealing the ball twice.

Who’s Next:   The Warriors entertain Highland Park at 7:30 p.m. Friday for senior night. 

The Bottom Line:      In a game played to promote breast cancer awareness, Deerfield took command early and never looked back holding Maine East to less than ten points in three of four quarters. Deerfield held a 30-14 edge at halftime and outhustled Maine East 15-4 in the final period after a close third quarter.

Swimming

The Final Score:          Deerfield 105, Maine West 78,

Warriors Star Performers:    The 200-yard medley relay team of Ryan Smith, Daniel Perolvsky, Nate Block and Alec Barry and the quartet of Alex Howard, Joey Barr, Bobby Crane and Danny Booker both won. Individual winners were Conner (200 freestyle and 100 freestyle), Barry (50 freestyle), Sean Scarry (diving), Block (100 butterfly) and Barr (500 freestyle).

Other Notable Warrior Performances:       Second place finishers were Perlovsky (200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke), Evan Fischoff (500 freestyle), Ryan Church (diving), Benji Perez (100 backstroke), Barry (100 freestyle), Barr (200 freestyle) and Smith (50 freestyle).

Who’s Next:   The Warriors compete in the Central Suburban League North Division Meet at 9 a.m. Feb. 9 at Maine East.
