Deerfield High School diver Sean Scarry currently sits in third place after the preliminary rounds of the State Meet today at New Trier High School in Winnetka. A state championship is within his grasp.

Brandis Heffner of University High in Normal is currently in first place with 325.75 points followed by Marian’ Joey Cifelli at 324.65. Scarry has some ground to make up to continue a Deerfield tradition of state champions but is guaranteed a medal.
Two years ago Erin Purdy was the girls’ diving champion and Olympian Christina Loukas won the title four years in a row. “It’s awesome,” Scarry said of the tradition. “She comes by to see how we’re doing,” he added about Loukas.
Scarry was joined in the preliminary rounds by Ryan Church. Church compiled 159.05 points in his first dives and did not make the final 16 to continue Friday. He finished 27th among the competitors. Twelve divers are in the finals.
The other Warrior at the State Meet was freshman Ryan Smith. Smith had a preliminary time of 55.18 in the 100-yard backstroke putting him 44th best in Illinois. He did not make the finals.
