Weather Rules Warrior Spring Outdoor Sports

Rain and cold have caused more cancellations than games played for baseball and softball teams.

What difference a year makes.

A year ago the Deerfield High School baseball team was playing in 80-degree weather during spring break at Adams Field while the softball team was doing the same in Florida.

This year, the weather has taken more games from the Warriors than any opponent. The baseball team has an 8-5-14 record with the 14 being the number of games cancelled or postponed because of rain or cold, according to the school website.

Warrior baseball Coach Kevin Marsh, who has been leading teams in the area for 21 years, remembers few seasons like 2013 but minimizes the effect on the team. The last onslaught of rain has set the season apart.

“The weather has had very minimal impact. They’ve been stable and working hard inside until we could get back outside,” Marsh said. “Everybody remembers last year when it was 80 degrees,” he added about last year’s record breaking warmth.

Things have been similar for the softball team which has played 14 games and lost 12 to cold or rain. The difference between the two schedules is the softball team played six of those contests in Florida over spring break.

Even athletes who play in most weather have felt the impact. The girls’ track team has had three outdoor meets and three more were not held. The boys’ track squad has fared better getting five of six meets in.

In Soccer, the Warriors have played 13 times and lost out to cold or rain five. The boys’ lacrosse team has played five times and been scrubbed twice while the girls got six of eight games in. The tennis squad has played 10 of its 12 planned events but three were in Louisville over vacation.

The teams which play indoors like volleyball, water polo, gymnastics and badminton have not had a problem other than the day school was dismissed out early because of flooding.
