Flag Retirement Ceremony

On Wednesday, June 12th, the Sons of the American Legion (SAL) and the Deerfield-Bannockburn Fire Protection District will be hosting the annual Flag Retirement Ceremony at the Jewett Park Shelter. Many people are unaware that the proper way to dispose of flags that are old and damaged is to have them burned in a respectful ceremony. The Deerfield SAL collects flags throughout the year and performs this ceremony to celebrate the evolution and history of our Nation's Flag. There will be rare flags on display and several local Boy Scout Troops on hand to discuss the history of those flags. Once the ceremony ends, the old and damaged flags will be burned under the guidance of the Deerfield-Bannockburn Fire Protection District. This is a fun and educational event for history buffs and anyone who wants to know more about our Flag. Area residents who have flags that are no longer in good condition, should drop them off in a plastic bag at the American Legion Hall, 849 Waukegan Road in downtown Deerfield, or across the street at the Village Hall in the lobby. The West Deerfield Township Assessor’s office, 601 Deerfield Road, will also accept them. The ceremony starts at 6:30 pm on Wednesday June 12th and everyone is welcome.
