Deerfield 9U's Take League Baseball Crown

Grays top Prospect Heights to win Lake Shore Feeder League title.

Deerfield’s 9U Gray travel baseball team topped Prospect Heights, 11-3, Sunday to win the Lake Shore Feeder League Championship. The Grays are part of the traveling program. 

The Grays finished the season with a 17-1 record topping their opponents by a combined 262-98 score and scoring more runs per game than any of the 146 teams in all age divisions of the league. 

In the title game, the Grays scored seven runs in the second inning with hits from Blake Valfer, Elliot Brockstein, Jordan Wood, Blake Sodikoff and Jonah Kaplan.  Joe Gulans, Matt Siciliano and David Weinstein provided the pitching help.

In the semifinals, Deerfield overcame a 10-1 deficit to earn the right to play for the championship. Shane McNulty broke a 10-10 tie in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI to secure the win. 

Earlier in the game, Siciliano, Kaplan, and Weinstein shut down Vernon Hills in the last four innings while the Grays got hits from Weinstein, Siciliano and Wood, whose two-run single tied the game at 10.

The Grays beat Evanston, 13-1, in the first round with Wood, Kaplan, and Brockstein throwing a one-hitter between them.  Their second round game against Northbrook was close until a home run by Gulans and another hit by Ryan Trudeau put the contest out of reach. 

The other team members are Matthew Glassberg and Ethan Friedman.  Ross Friedman is the head coach and the assistants are Reid Valfer, Bruce Brockstein, Jeff Sodikoff and Hal Wood.
