District 109 Projects Budget Surplus

Parents raise questions about special education at recent School Board meeting.

The proposed budget for Deerfield Public Schools District 109’s 2012-2013 school year will have a small surplus, according to a report given by Assistant Superintendent Greg Himebaugh at the June 18 Board of Education meeting.

Himebaugh anticipates a budget surplus of $3,700. A lower increase in the consumer price index kept the excess less than in recent years, according to a report on the District 109 website. This is the eighth straight year the District has taken in more than it has spent.

In addition to Himebaugh’s report on the proposed budget, some parents had both questions and points about special education, according to a report on the District 109 Website. Parents Jodi Shapira, Lisa Polisner and Katie Bittner, who is also a special education teacher, all spoke.

These comments, questions and the answers involved individual educational plans, the timing of services and the use of study halls rather than foreign language classes for select students. The details of these comments and responses from the Board can be found on the District website.
