DYBA All Stars Excite Fans

Bronco and Pony League games go back and forth. Weather ends Pinto softball tilt.

There was plenty of baseball in Deerfield over the Memorial Day weekend with six all star games scheduled for youngsters from 7 through 14 years old.

Pony League Baseball

The bats in the Pony League game Friday night contained more thunder than the skies despite the fact the game was delayed twice by storms. The Midwest topped the South, 17-11.

"What an outstanding honor it is for these young men to play in this game" Pony League Co-President Paul Chanan said. "Pony is the last league they will play in before getting to high school. Many of these guys have been playing DYBA baseball since they were hitting off tees."

Despite the fact the contest was an all star game; the competition was fierce, according to league Co-President Gary Polisner. "All-Star game or not, these boys were playing to win," he said. “It’s really special to watch these kids having fun and loving the game, but you could see the competitive juices were still flowing late in the game."

Bronco League Baseball

Despite an early 9-1 lead Friday night for the Blacks, the Reds tied the game in the fifth and sent it into extra innings before securing a one-run victory after eight.

The early Black lead was propelled by Ari Nadler’s grand slam homer, solid defense by Jimmy Yanow and the strong pitching of Justin Pottinger.

With his team down a run heading into the sixth, Red pitcher Christian DiBenedetto threw a scoreless frame.

In the seventh, Richie Shapira of the Reds opened the inning with a walk and stole his way to third before the Blacks got two outs. Shapira then stole home to send the game to keep his team alive. Closer Jonathan Dawson blanked the Blacks in the bottom of the inning to extend the contest.

The Reds scored a pair of runs in the top of the eighth and held the Blacks to a single tally in the bottom to secure the victory.

Pinto League Softball

More than 100 fans were on hand Saturday morning for the Pinto softball game but the weather got the better of the two squads coached by Michelle Wasserstrom and Kevin Ryan. The game lasted an inning and a third before it was postponed becaue of rain.

The game resumed Monday with nearly 100 friends, family and others on hand to watch. There was strong hitting and defense by these all stars, according to information from DYBA.
