Football Injury Brings Warriors Closer

Prognosis for Deerfield High School senior Sam Modro is good after he left football game in an ambulance.

The Warriors not only lost to the rival Giants for the first time since the current seniors like running back Sam Modro have been in school but they watched Modro, who scored the team’s only touchdown in the first quarter, taken to the hospital in an ambulance early in the fourth period.

“He (Modro) is home,” Deerfield Coach Steve Winiecki said Saturday. “There is no long term damage and the prognosis is good.” The details of the injury were not disclosed. Will Modro return to the field this season? “We’re not concerned about that now,” Winiecki added.

Talk at the Deerfield Farmers’ Market on autumn Saturdays is often about the Warriors game the night before. Today it was concern for Modro. “How is the boy?” Village Trustee Robert Nadler asked as he sat at a table.

As soon as the Warriors returned to the high school Friday, most of them turned around and headed back to Highland Park to see how their teammate Modro was doing in the hospital.

“This shows the character of our team,” Winiecki said. “It shows how they look out for each other and how Sam is looked at by his peers.” The feeling was not lost on Modro and his family. “They were very touched by it,” Winiecki added.

As the players left the field, they walked quietly showing quiet feelings about the events of the evening. “There was a lot of emotion going through the locker room for many reasons,” Winiecki said.

From a football prospective, Deerfield, now 1-4, knows it must win its remaining four games to end the season with a winning record. Winiecki’s job is helping them prepare for it.

“We can’t win four games on one Friday night,” Winiecki said. “We’re going to prepare for Glenbrook North. We play Glenbrook North next” That game is at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Adams Field for homecoming.
