Former DYBA Stars Face Off as Pros

Robbie Goldstick and Wes Braun, onetime Deerfield teammates, are playing professional baseball against each other in Australia.

While American baseball fans were riveted on the World earlier this week, Deerfield Youth Baseball and Softball Association (DYBA) enthusiasts had a reason to pay attention to a particular diamond in Australia.

Two former DYBA and Deerfield High School standouts, Robbie Goldstick and Wes Braun, found themselves competing against each other Tuesday when the Macarthur Orioles defeated the Ryde Red Hawks, 3-1.

Goldstick, who is currently hitting 300, is catching for the Red Hawks while Braun pitches for the Orioles. They play in the New South Wales League, a minor league to Australia’s top conference.

After their DYBA and Warrior careers, Braun went on to pitch for the University of Illinois while Goldstick ended up competing for Endicott College in Beverly, MA. Braun continued his career in Australia after college while Goldstick took a different path.

Goldstick was coaching and working at a job outside baseball when a former Endicott teammate and pitcher suggested he play for the Red Hawks because the hurler wanted a good catcher. A week later, he was on a plane.
