Warrior Swimmers Edged by Giants

Highland Park High School swim team secures victory over Deerfield High School in final race.

Winning the final event of the night, Highland Park High School’s swimming team defeated Township High School District 113 rival Deerfield, 95-90, Friday in the Giant pool.

With the meet in the balance, the Giant 400-yarde freestyle quartet of Alex Grigorovich, Phillip Goldberg, Levy Nathan and Ben Laedlein swam a little better than two seconds faster than Warriors Joey Barr, Danny Booker, Kellen Scanlan and Ryan Smith to win the race.

Laedlein added victories in the 100 backstroke and 200 individual medley while teaming with Nathan, Eddie Kochman and Allen Tran to win the 200 freestyle relay over the Deerfield quartet of Scott Stern, Patrick Abrahams, Evan Horwitz and Bobby Crane.

In the 200 freestyle relay, Deerfield’s Crane, Scanlan, Booker and Smith took top honors ahead of Highland Park’s Kochman, Grigorovich, Goldberg and Jack Tresley.

Smith added individual victories for Deerfield in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly while taking second in the 200 individual medley. Booker added a victory in the 100 freestyle and a second in the 200 individual medley.

Grigorovich added a first place finish for Highland Park in the in the 200 freestyle and a second in the 100 freestyle while Goldberg took the 500 freestyle and second in the 200 freestyle. Kochman added second place finishes in the 50 and 100 freestyle.

Other individual winners for Deerfield were Ryan Church in diving and Stern in the 100 backstroke. Second place Warriors were Sean Scarry in diving, Horwitz in the 100 breaststroke and Benji Perez in the 200 individual medley.

Other multiple placers for Highland Park were Tran winning the 100 breaststroke and taking second in the 50 freestyle along with Kochman with runner up honors in the 50 and 100 freestyle as well as Nathan in the 100 butterfly and 500 freestyle.
