Girls Basketball: Yucknut Powers Deerfield Past Glenbrook North

Junior pours in 18 points; Warriors cruise to 56-37 victory.

It was a much-needed win for the Deerfield girls basketball team.

"It's definitely a huge boost," Deerfield junior Kerry Glass said.  "Glenbrook North has always been the biggest rival in the conference, whether they're good or not.  And so this was a huge boost for us."

The Warriors snapped a four- game losing streak with a 56-37 win over Glenbrook North on Friday night.  They also picked up their first conference win of the year.

Junior Liz Yucknut led the way for Deerfield, scoring nine of her game-high 18 points in the first quarter, helping the Warriors come back from an early four-point deficit to lead by six after the opening eight minutes.

"After the first make, I knew I was going to be hitting," Yucknut said.  "So when I got in the open floor, I just knew to take it and it worked for the most part.  My teammates recognized it and they made sure to cut and kick out.  So it was definitely a team effort."

After building a 32-19 halftime lead, Deerfield came out a little sluggish to start the second half, giving up six straight points and allowing GBN to cut the lead to seven.  But that was as close as the Spartans would get.

On back-to-back possesions, Samara Hass connected a three-point play and Yucknut hit a three-pointer to extend the lead back to 15 late in the third.

Senior Kathleen Forrest also chipped in 14 for the Warriors (4-6, 1-2) while Glass scored seven.  The offensive leaders for Glenbrook North (1-9, 1-2) were Kelly Dress and Sammie Von Rueden, who each scored six points.
