Kelsey, Flavin Reach Top 10 in State Golf

Deerfield High School takes 10th in team competition.

Defending state golf champion Ian Kelsey of Deerfield High School fired a second round 72 to place seventh in the State Meet today in Bloomington while Highland Park High School’s Patrick Flavin grabbed eighth.

Both Flavin and Kelsey improved on their opening round scores Friday to increase their final standing. Kelsey jumped from 17th to seventh while Flavin moved from 29th to eighth with a one-under par 71 today.

As a team, the Warriors ended up 10th with 640 strokes after ending the first day of competition in 11th. Nick Kenyon, whose 91 Friday was not included in the tabulation, fired a 79 Saturday to help Deerfield better its standing.

Also contributing to Deerfield’s team effort were Thomas Shimamoto (84/166), Jacob Krugman (84/167), Jack Dickman (87/169) and Eric Bagg (89/171).

Highland Park’s other competitor, Sam Meitus, carded a 74 Saturday to end the tournament in 21st place improving from 58th after the first day.

In the girls’ competition in Decatur, Highland Park’s Kelli Ono shot her second 78 of the tournament for a 16th place finish while Lisa Kraff’s two-day 170 total was good for 67th.
