Lieb, Alfieri Power Warriors to 5th Place
Deerfield High School pair notch double doubles in win over Vernon Hills.
Double doubles by Jack Lieb and Michael Alfieri led the Deerfield High School boys’ basketball team to a 65-57 victory over Vernon Hills Saturday to earn fifth place in the Wheeling Hardwood Classic.
Lieb, with 18 points and 11 rebounds, and Alfieri, who had 14 tallies and 10 boards, were two of four Warriors to score in double figures along with Eric Porter and Jack Gurvey, who had 10 each. Alfieri also managed three assists.
Deerfield jumped out to a 14-11 win at the end of the first quarter and built it to a 29-22 advantage by halftime. A solid third quarter put the Warriors ahead, 45-34, before both teams went on a scoring binge in the final stanza.

Also contributing to the Deerfield effort were Stefanos Fasianos with five points, four assists, four rebounds and a steal. Porter had a pair of rebounds and an assist while Gurvey chipped in with three assists and a rebound.
The Warriors are now 10-4 for the season and return to Central Suburban League North Division play at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 10 when they entertain Glenbrook North. Deerfield is 2-1 in league play.
