Loukas Finishes 8th in Olympic Diving

Matches performance four years ago in Beijing.

came up a bit short in her hopes to claim a medal in the finals of the three-meter springboard diving competition today at the Aquatics Center of the London Olympics.

Loukas scored 332.10 to finish eighth in the world. It is the same position the Riverwoods’ native and graduate had 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

“Loukas is performing well today,” British Broadcast Company commentator Liam Taylor said. “A little bit away from her best. She will be eighth today. I think that is about right with her performance today.

Loukas finished with a score of 339.75 on Saturday in the semifinals and was seeded sixth in today’s finals. The former Warrior got off to a good start with her back, 2-1/2 somersault, which earned her a 69.0.

Her performance was solid from there with the tough judging taking its toll on the tiniest errors.

She scored a 64.50 on her second dive, a reverse, 2-1/2 somersault, after she was too close to the board on her way down. But Loukas rallied on her next two dives, scoring a 66.00 on her inward 2-/12 somersault and a 65.10 on her forward, 3-1/2 somersault.

On her final dive, a Forward 2-1/2 somersault with a twist, Loukas got great air position, but brought her feet down with a bit of splash and the judges awarded her a 67.50. She then went to the warm-up pool, where she waved to the camera and her two dozen family members in attendance, knowing that she put forth a great effort.

A group of more than 50 people gathered at the Cubby Bear in Lincolnshire, an establishment owned by her father, George Loukas, to cheer for her. Patch will have a story tomorrow about the gathering and how Christina was bettering high school athletes in fourth grade.

American teammate Cassidy Krug was seventh with a score of 342.85. China’s Wu Minxia won the gold medal tallying 414.00.
