Race Day Coming to Deerfield May 6

For those who wish, they can do a double header of the Deer Dash and the Breathe Deep 5K.

Distance runners will have a field day in Deerfield May 6 with the annual Deer Dash at 8 a.m. at Jaycee Park followed by the at 10:30 a.m. at .

For those who wish, the timing allows a double header of a pair of races with plenty of time to complete a 5K or 10K in the Deer Dash and get to the Deerfield High School track for the Breathe Deep opening festivities at 10 a.m.

The Deer Dash features a 10K race, a 5K run and a one-mile fun run beginning and finishing at . Registration starts at 7 a.m. but people can register now at the Deerfield Park District website.

In its second year, the Breathe Deep event expects between 600 and 800 runners and walkers to take part in the event aimed at raising money to fight lung cancer through the LUNGevity Foundation, according to event coordinator Sue Bersh.

“We’ve raised our fundraising goal to $90,000 from $72, 000,” said Bersh in reaction to the fact more than $68,000 has already come in.

Registration will open at 9 a.m. with a rally set for 10 a.m., a balloon launch at 10:20 a.m. and the race at 10:30 a.m.
