St. Viator Snaps Warrior Win Streak

Deerfield High School boys' basketball team falls in Wheeling Tournament.

Falling victim to a St. Viator first quarter rush, Deerfield High School’s boys’ basketball team lost to St. Viator, 55-47, Thursday in the quarterfinals of the Wheeling Hardwood Classic ending a four-game winning streak.

Deerfield had won four games in a row including its last two Central Suburban League North Division encounters, before running into the highly regarded Lions.

St. Viator jumped on the Warriors from the start taking a 22-5 lead at the end of the first quarter and building it to 46-19 by halftime. Deerfield managed to cut the margin in the second half but could not get within striking distance.

Jack Lieb led the Warrior scoring with 10 points while grabbing four rebounds. Eric Porter added eight tallies, two rebounds and a steal. Michael Alfieri contributed seven scores, a pair of rebounds and a block as Jack Gurvey and Nick Zwart had six points each. Zwart grabbed three rebounds and stole the ball once while Gurvey took down three boards and dished out an assist.

Deerfield is now 8-4 for the season and competes in the consolation round against Glenbrook South at 3:4 p.m. today.
