VIDEO: Calistri's Hat Trick Sends Deerfield to Sectional Final

Joey Calistri and Warriors' defense shine in Deerfield's 4-0 sectional semifinal win over Grayslake Central, for third straight postseason shutout

Deerfield senior added three more goals to his single season school record (37) Tuesday night in Deerfield's 4-0 sectional semifinal win over Grayslake Central. While Calistri and the Warriors' high-powered offense continue to garner much of the attention, it's been their defense that has made the difference so far in the postseason, registering three straight shutout wins.

"We've got a nice rhythm with our defense right now," Deerfield Head Coach Elliot Hurtig said. "With Leland Pew, Spencer Brailov, Josh Acosta, Alex Strauss, Adam Rabushka and Matt Zussman, they're just playing great back there. We also have a keeper with more confidence and that's what leads to all those shutouts."

Thanks to a solid defensive effort, Deerfield goalkeeper Josh Norris didn't see to many shots on net, but he did make one spectacular save to maintain Deerfield's shutout streak. Check out the video link to watch that save.

Jason Kayne started the scoring for (18-5-1), notching his second postseason goal (and second straight game-winner) in the 24th minute to break a scoreless tie. After playing their regional games on a turf field, it took the Warriors a little while to get used to playing on grass again.

"I think our rhythm was a little bit off because we've been playing so many games on the turf," Hurtig said. "When you switch to grass, you could tell that the ball was getting stuck at their feet. So that was a little bit frustrating for our guys, but we worked through it."

Calistri did the rest of the scoring for Deerfield and now has seven goals in three playoff games this season. His two first half goals were scored in a 33 second time span to help Deerfield take control of the game and go into halftime with a 3-0 lead. Calistri's third goal came on a free kick in the 65th minute.

Deerfield has now won five straight games and will take on Lakes in the sectional final game on Saturday at 11 am.
