VIDEO: Deerfield Cross Country Enters Season with 'State Focus'

The Warriors return five of their top seven runners from last years regional championship team and are ranked 19th in the state in preseason polls

The boys cross country team won their first regional title in 31 years last season. However, injury trouble prevented them from making a run to state, as they finished well out of contention at the Palatine Sectional.

"That was a very humbling lesson for us," Deerfield Head Coach said. "It upset them and they trained hard into the track season and they worked hard. They don't ever want to have that feeling again of being a regional champ and then getting 17th at the sectional."

That sectional setback has provided more motivation for a team that returns five of its top seven runners from a year ago.

"We've changed our mentality quite a bit after winning regionals last year," Deerfield senior Makoto Bowering said. "We really want to go and do well in state this year. We're definitely hoping to win a medal and bring home a trophy."

Makoto and juniors Alex Gold and Shai Farhi give the Warriors three returning all-conference runners. Given Deerfield's returning talent, Dyestat has them ranked as the 19th best team in the state in preseason polls.
