VIDEO: Deerfield's Calistri Proving to be Unstoppable

Bound for Northwestern next year, Joey Calistri is dominating early on in his senior season

The boys soccer team has scored 15 goals in five games this season. Joey Calistri has scored 12 of those 15 goals. Set to play for Northwestern next year, the Deerfield senior is quick to credit his teammates for his offensive success.

"We've got a great midfield," Calistri said. "I can only score if I get good balls and we're playing great, our whole team is. That's allowing me to play great, but we're all playing great. It's not just me."

Scoring in bunches is nothing new to the Warriors team captain. In his previous three years on the varsity squad, he's notched goal totals of 8, 18 and 28. Through five games this season, his career total is up 66 and he is approaching a school record. Despite his staggering offensive numbers, Calistri believes there's still plenty of room for improvement.

"In practice, nobody's working harder and nobody's encouraging everyone else more than Joey," Deerfield Head Coach Elliot Hurtig said. "It's just one of those things where it's also nice that he happens to be one of the best players in the state."

"Just raw talent," Hurtig said. "He's got incredible balance on the ball. It's hard to knock him off the ball and he's got great cut moves and he can also accelerate."
