VIDEO: Defense, Special Teams Help Deerfield Down Glenbrook North

Kerstein scores first touchdown of career on blocked punt to help spark Deerfield past defending CSL North champs Glenbrook North.

Records: Glenbrook North (1-4, 0-1)   Deerfield (2-3, 1-0)

Quick Recap: In the first CSL North conference game of the season, Glenbrook North looked like they might pick up right where they left off last season, beating to go 5-0 in conference play and winning the CSL North title. The Spartans jumped out to a 7-0 lead after marching 75 yards for an opening drive touchdown. Curt Petty connected with Trevor Ponticelli on the 23 yard touchdown toss.

Jeremy Kritt would respond with a 21 yard touchdown run in the second quarter to make it a 10-7 GBN lead at halftime.

Despite the fact that the Spartans controlled the ball for most the third quarter, Deerfield still managed to take the lead when Jacob Balder blocked a GBN punt and John Kerstein returned it for a touchdown.

Deerfield led 14-10 after the third quarter and extended the lead on a 12 yard touchdown run by Tyler Vajdic with 7:57 remaining in the game. A Grant Rushing five yard touchdown cut the lead to 21-18 wth 4:30 remaining. However, Deerfield was able to run the clock and put the game away on a seven yard touchdown run from Marc Pagano.

Statistical Leaders: Senior fullback Jeremy Kritt led a balanced offensive attack for the Warriors, carrying the ball 15 times for 64 yards and a touchdown.  Glenbrook North quarterback Curt Petty led the way for the Spartans, going 16-of-24 for 154 yards and a touchdown.

Quotes: "We ran our offense well," Deerfield Head Coach Steve Winiecki said. "We had three different people score and got a special teams score. This was a good win against a good football team. When you have the opportunity to play them and you come out on the right side, it's certainly a good thing."

"I thought we had a great game plan on both sides of the ball to be honest," Glenbrook North Head Coach Bob Pieper said. "In the first half I don't think we punted. We were moving the ball like we thought we could. We just didn't put it in the end zone and didn't catch any breaks."
