VIDEO: Warriors Open Season with Big Win

Seniors Sternberg and Carney lead Deerfield to 79-46 game-one win over Wells

Very few members of the Deerfield boys basketball team saw much playing time over the last two seasons, but their inexperience didn’t show one bit in the first game of the season.  The Warriors rolled to a 79-46 win over Wells in Ed Molitor Thanksgiving Classic Tuesday night at Palatine High School.

After graduating their entire starting five from last year's conference championship team, the Warriors didn’t seem to miss a beat.

Deerfield opened the game with a 10-0 run and never looked back, leading 25-7 after the first quarter.  Senior Jack Carney helped jump-start the offense early on, scoring 12 of his 16 points in the first half.  Sam Sternberg and Mack Watts also chipped in eight first-half points as the Warriors led 44-13 at halftime.

Sternberg made sure the Raiders didn’t mount a comeback in the second half, scoring 11 of his game-high 19 points after the break.  Senior Josh Schur also chipped in eight points, while Watts had 12.
