Warrior Boys Win 3 of 4 in Tourney

Deerfield High School boys' basketball team takes three of four games in season opening Palatine Tournament.

Taking three of four games in the Palatine Thanksgiving Tournament, the Deerfield High School boys’ basketball team opened its season on a winning note last week.

Defeating Rolling Meadows, 60-53, Tuesday and Richards, 79-40, Wednesday, the Warriors stormed back from a 48-32 loss to York Friday to upend the host Pirates, 57-48, Saturday.

Like they have the last two seasons, Michael Alfieri (15 points, nine rebounds) and Eric Porter (12 points) teamed up to lead Deerfield in the final game. Patrick Burns added 10 as the Warriors jumped in front, expanded their lead in the third quarter and held off a Palatine rally in the final period.

The day before, Deerfield fell behind early against York and was not able to overcome 22 percent shooting from the field. Porter led the team with seven tallies and Alfieri had four rebounds. Jordan Baum added six scores.

In their second contest of the tourney, the Warriors dominated Richards taking a 42-16 lead into intermission. Porter scored 22 points on 61 percent shooting while Stefanos Fasianos chipped in with 17. Alfieri and Nicholas Zwart grabbed six rebounds each while Jack Lieb and Patrick Burns added five apiece.

In the opener, Deerfield outscored Rolling Meadows, 19-11, in the fourth quarter to overcome an early deficit. Porter led the way with 22 points and Jack Gurvey added 13 tallies and four steals.

Deerfield returns to action at 7:30 p.m. today at Glenbrook South.
