Warrior Wrap: Track, Baseball, Tennis, & More

Deerfield tennis team finishes second in state; track team finishes fifth; baseball and volleyball fall just short of regional titles.

Boys Track and Field

A week after winning the , the Deerfield boys track team finished fifth in class 3A at this weekends state track meet at Eastern Illinois University.  led the way for the Warriors, finishing second in shot (62 feet-1/4 of an inch) and third in discus (181 feet-10 inches).  He finished behind defending state champ Jermaine Kline of Lake Park, who set an all-time state record of 66 feet-5 3/4 inches.  In disc, Liokumovich finished behind brothers Jermaine and Jeremy Kline.  Fellow senior Kyle Foerch was also ninth in discus after posting a personal-best throw of 158-3.

Senior Kyle Friedman tied for fifth in pole vault (14-6) and senior Thomas Schweinfurth tied for 12th in pole vault (14-0).  Junior Danny Katz was third in triple jump (45-7 ¾).

The team's fifth place finish is its highest since tying for second in Class AA in 1978.

Deerfield junior Jason Brown finished third in state for the second year in a row.  He defeated last year's state-runner up Tim Kopinski from Stagg  4-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the third place match and helped lead the Warriors to a second place team finish with 36 points.  Deerfield finished behind defending state champion New Trier.

Deerfield seniors  Alec Siegel and Ben Shklyar tied for seventh in doubles.   Sophomore Toby Ma finished in a four-way tie for ninth.

Baseball

Despite on Friday, the Deerfield baseball team fell just short of its first regional title since 1985, losing to St. Viator 5-2 in the Highland Park Regional final Monday afternoon.

All five St. Viator runs came on four home runs, surrendered by three different Warrior pitchers.  Meanwhile, both Deerfield runs were unearned.  The  No. 15 seeded Warriors end the season with a 15-18 record.

Boys Volleyball

The Warrior boys volleyball team faced a tough task in the Deerfield Regional Final last Wednesday, falling to top seeded Buffalo Grove 25-22, 25-19.

Jim Letten led Deerfield with nine kills, while Eric Silcroft and Daniel Kaplan each had seven.

The Warriors ended the season by winning seven of their last ten games and finished the season with a 19-18 record.
