Warriors Edge Mt. Carmel for Playoff Win

Deerfield High School hockey team advances in Blackhawk Cup State Tournament with third period rally.

Scoring four unanswered goals in the third period gave the Deerfield High School hockey team a 5-4 win over Mt. Carmel Wednesday in its opening round game of the Blackhawk Cup State Tournament in Buffalo Grove, according to information on the team’s website.

Down 4-1 in at the end of two periods, Henry Beaudoin, Mike Wiggemansen and Spencer Delman combined for four goals in the final period tying the game with less than five minutes to play and taking the lead less than two  minutes later with 3:28 left.

“We’ve never been down this much and come back,” Coach Hank Waters said on the website. “This is a good team and they know how to play.”

In the first two periods, Beaudoin scored the Warriors only goal and they left the ice trailing, 4-1. After a spirited words from Waters, Beaudoin and Delman during the intermission between the second and third periods, Deerfield came on the ice a different team for the final stanza, according to the website.

Beaudoin got things started with a steal and an unassisted goal to make the score 4-2. With less than nine minutes to go, Robbie Friend cleared a pass to Beaudoin who moved the puck to Wiggemansen who put it in the net to bring his team within one, 4-3.

Wiggemansen tied the game four minutes later. Then it was Delman’s turn as he took the puck near the red line, skated past two Caravan defenders and backhanded a shot into the goal to give Deerfield the lead.

The Warriors advance to the round of 16 where they play Loyola Academy at 8:30 p.m. March 11 in Bensenville. Their record is now 28-3-4.
