Warriors Rip Titans, Play for Fifth Place

Deerfield High School boys' basketball team dumps Glenbrook South to move into fifth place game at Wheeling Hardwood Classic.

With four player scoring in double figures, Deerfield High School’s boys’ basketball team dominated Glenbrook South, 71-58, Friday to earn the opportunity to play for fifth-place honors today at the Wheeling Hardwood Classic.

Eric Porter and Michael Alfieri led the way as the game remained close for three quarters before a 22-14 Deerfield run in the final period put sufficient distance between the Warriors and the Titans.

Deerfield held an 18-15 edge at the end of the first but Glenbrook South led, 31-30 at intermission. The Warriors got back on top with 19 third-quarter tallies to lead at the end, 49-44, before putting the game away in fourth.

Porter scored 17 points with 11 of them coming on 11 for 12 shooting from the charity stripe. He also distributed the ball for five assists and stole the ball five times while getting a rebound.

Alfieri added 16 points while hauling down eight rebounds, handing out three assists and stealing the ball once.

Joseph Lane and Nick Zwart also reached double figures with 10 points each. Zwart added five rebounds and a block while Lane contributed a rebound and an assist. Stefanos Fasianos chipped in with nine tallies and four boards.

Deerfield will meet Vernon Hills at 3:45 p.m. today for fifth place in the tourney. The Warriors improved to 9-4 for the season.
