Warriors Top Vernon Hills, Head to State

Deerfield High School volleyball team wins Antioch Sectional to earn Warriors' first trip to State Finals.

Deerfield High School’s boys’ volleyball team made two different kinds of history today.

The Warriors won the team’s first ever Sectional championship defeating Vernon Hills in straight sets, 25-22, 25-19, in Antioch to advance to Deerfield’s initial State Meet appearance Friday and Saturday in Hoffman Estates.

“I'm so proud of my boys and I'm thrilled to see all of their hard work pay off for them,” Coach Eugene Chung said. “We've talked all season about playing with focus and playing together and they've been doing just that. This has been one of my most coachable groups of guys and they truly earned what they worked for.”

A host of Warriors contributed to the victory in different ways led by Zach Hara, Jordan Fine and John Harlan. Hara scored on eight kills and added five digs. Fine set things up with 26 assists while adding six digs. Harlan chipped in seven kills and a dig.

Help also came from Kenison Ready with six kills, four digs and an assist. Jake Brody added 11 digs, two aces and an assist while Eli Schmidt had five kills and a block. Adam Nadler dug the ball out before it hit the court six times along with an ace. Eric Slepian chipped in with three kills and an assist.

Deerfield is now 32-6 for the season with three possible games left. The Warriors open State Meet play at 5 p.m. Friday against Downers Grove South with the winner advancing to the semifinals Saturday. A loss ends the season.
