Sports in the Deerfield area kept residents captivated this year, and Deerfield Patch has been there to cover it all.
Here we recap the top 10 sports-related stories of the year.

1. 52 Deerfield Runners Finish Chicago Marathon
Deerfield runners Nate McPherson and Scott Friedlander were among the top 1,000 finishers in the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. In all, 52 people from the Village finished the race, according to the official marathon website.
Deerfield High School senior athletes Joey Calistri and Austin Jones signed national letters of intent to compete in their sports at the college level. Calistri will play soccer for Northwestern University while Jones will be a free safety on the football team at Alabama A & M.
3. Kelsey Wins State Golf Title
Ian Kelsey became Deerfield’s fourth state champion in less than a year when the Deerfield High School junior shared the 2012 Illinois golf crown with Jack Junge in a rain-shortened tournament in Bloomington.
4. Caruso Wrestlers Take Tourney Title
Caruso came in first in the January wrestling tournament.
5. Loukas Finishes 8th in Olympic Diving
Christina Loukas comes up short in her hopes to claim a medal in the finals of the three-meter springboard diving competition at the London Olympics. She scored 332.10 to finish eighth in the world. It is the same position the Riverwoods’ native and Deerfield High School graduate had 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
Holden Heller of Caruso Middle School and Andrew Mehrholz of Shepard Middle School win state wrestling championships at the Illinois Elementary School Association State Meet in DeKalb.
7. DHS Athletes Make College Commitments
Local athletes choose where they’ll continue to play their sports in college.
8. Deerfield 9U’s Take League Baseball Crown
Deerfield’s 9U Gray travel baseball team tops Prospect Heights 11-3 to win the Lake Shore Feeder League Championship.
9. North Suburban Olympian’s Journey Twists and Turns
Lake Forest’s Jillian Schwartz head to the London Olympics as an Israeli.
Deerfield seniors Lenny Bloom and Artie Bess head to the state wrestling tournament for the second straight year after capturing individual titles at the class 3A Barrington Sectional.
