Deerfield Warrior 10U Red Girls Softball Team Captures Championship!

The Deerfield Warrior 10U Red Girls Softball Team captured the 10U Championship at the Trevian Tournament this past weekend.  With a combination of timely hitting, base running and fantastic pitching, the Warriors went 3-0 on Sunday in elimination play to win the 2013 title.

In game one, the Warriors used the solid pitching of Tyler Schreiber and Halle Mangurten along with timely hitting from Mallory Sawyer to rally from a 4-2 deficit to force extra innings against the Trevian Blue team.  The Warriors came through in their final at bat as Maya Geren drove home Olivia Engerman with the winning run, as the Warriors prevailed 5-4.

In game two, the Warrior offense came to life against the Warren Wave Silver to take control.  Solid hitting from Sara Ruelli, Maggie Geirut and Maggie Loesch produced four RBI’s, staking the Warriors to a big early lead.  Brooke Jackson and Engerman showed some nifty base running to produce two more runs to put Warriors up 6-0.  Sawyer’s defense behind the plate kept the Silver off the scoreboard, as she tagged out one runner trying to score on a wild pitch and flipped to Mangurten covering home to get a second runner trying to steal home from 3rd base.  The Warriors tacked on two more runs to pad their lead to 8-0 and then held on in the final inning to get the victory 8-4.

In the Championship Game, the Warriors dominated in every phase of the game against the Libertyville Cats.  Sami Chernawsky, Grace Baddeley, Geren and Mangurten had key hits for RBI’s and Nikki Wasserstrom had two singles and scored two runs to lead the Warrior offensive attack.  Mangurten pitched a complete game, giving up only 3 hits and one run as the Warriors cruised to a 9-1 victory and the Championship.
