Gallery: Grillfest Becomes Jester Family Affair

Local family helps Joan Reed make the annual event a success.

Deerfield’s annual Grillfest was a family affair for the Jesters.

Village Trustee Tom Jester helped grill more than 200 ears free corn at the Saturday while his four grandchildren helped serve it and his wife Patricia supervised along with Joan Reed, the market manager.

And the verdict from those who ate it was positive. “It’s the best corn I’ve ever had,” Gary Heller, a member of the Night Crawlers band which performed for the morning, said. “I’ve been eating it all morning.”

After Jester helped grill the corn, it was time for the younger generation to take over. Emma, 11, of Brookfield, WI, peeled the ears. Her sister, Tessa, 9, had a different job. “I soaked it in butter and gave it to the people,” Tessa said as siblings Sara, 7, and Kyra, 5, did what they could around the booth.

Reed was pleased with the event’s continued success. “Deerfield really rocked,” she said.  She is now preparing for the Harvest Festival Sept. 22, another major event of the season.
