There's More to My Son Than His Diagnosis

Here is a poem that I wrote from my special child's perspective. I wrote it two years ago but it still makes me smile everytime I read it. Enjoy!

There is more to me than my (Autism and) ADHD. Sometimes I wiggle a lot and run really fast. Don’t make fun of me, I have ants in my pants.

Sometimes I get too impatient and don’t stop to think. Is it safe to do this? Did that ring go down the sink? I just can’t help myself. I try really hard, to be a “good” boy when my morning starts.

But my brain runs too fast for me to tell it "stop". Usually I do something silly and land on my head. Pop! Please accept me for who I am. A bright, creative kid. I love my tae kwon do and sure learned how to kick. I'm always very happy and I care about my friends. Even when I get too excited and squeeze them on their heads.

My mom tells me that I'm so full of life, but I know that I sometimes cause a lot of strife. And then she reminds me that I was sent from heaven above for my mommy, daddy and sisters to love.

So next time you see me lick a dirty table, remind me and tell me "slow down your engine, Gabriel".
