Student Joins 32,000 in 25-Hour Vow of Silence

Danny Dubin is passionate about raising funds and awareness for Invisible Children's work in Africa.

You won’t hear a peep out of senior high school student on Monday. That’s because he’s silently raising money for charity.

“I’ll be joining over 25,000 participants around the world, and we will not be talking for 25 hours,” Dubin said before Monday's nationwide event. “I think it will have a strong impact.”

The money Dubin raises will go to Invisible Children, an organization trying to stop the use of child soldiers in Africa.

“He’s abducting these children,” Dubin said in reference to Joseph Kony, the leader of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), a rebel group in Uganda. “They ruin their lives and force them to become soldiers.”

For more then two decades, the LRA and government of Uganda have been at war. It is estimated that the guerilla group has abducted more than 50,000 children during that time.

“For some reason I have this growing passion to help out as much as I can,” Dubin said about his dedication to the cause after he met representatives in Dallas during a religious program in February. “Right away it hit me really, really hard,” Dubin remembered about his initial reaction.

The student said he couldn’t imagine being separated from his friends and family, which is the reason for his working hard “to give a voice to those that don’t have a voice.”

According to Invisible Children’s website, nearly 32,000 participants have signed up to keep silent on April 25 and more than $1 million has been raised. More than $5,000 of that amount is from Dubin’s efforts.
