UPDATE: Hundreds of Computers Collected at Local Drive

Residents turn out to help aid Waukegan families.

Deerfield’s recent computer drive for Waukegan families was a huge success.

According to United Way of Lake County (UWLC) more than 200 computers and accessories were dropped off last weekend.

UWLC teamed up with certified green consultant Kaye Kharasch and owner to host the weekend-long computer drive.

“What a great event! We had people pouring in and standing in line to donate these computers to my old alma mater [Waukegan High School],” Welch said.  “Anything we can do to help our kids and the world they live in is step in the right direction. We’d be happy to do it again.”

The drive was in conjunction with UWLC’s Computer Learn and Earn initiative. Event organizers say many Waukegan families lack home computers and since the program kicked off in October 92 have been distributed.

If you weren't able to make it to the Deerfield Citgo, computer donations can be dropped off at United Way's offices on 330 South Greenleaf in Gurnee during normal business hours.

-Previous story on May 2-

Deerfield Citgo owner Dave Welch graduated from Waukegan High School in 1976.  Now he's helping give back to a community that is in desperate need of technology.

"I lived there for 35 years," Welch said.  "I think it's a great thing that now that I have my own business that I can give something back to the school and community."

Welch teamed up with the United Way of Lake County to host a weekend-long computer drive.  All donated items will be used for the Computer Learn and Earn initiative for Waukegan families in need of computers.

Any family who attends a three-part training class receives a refurbished computer.  The United Way has already handed out 92 since the program started last October.

The goal was to raise 200 computers this weekend and over 100 were donated on Saturday alone.  If you weren't able to make it to the Deerfield Citgo, computer donations can also be dropped off at United Way's offices on 330 S. Greenleaf in Gurnee.
