Warriors, Giants compete for Shields Trophy

Annual rivalry game kicks off Friday in Highland Park.

Warriors, Giants renew District 113 rivalry

Few high school rivalries have a trophy attached to them but that is what goes on when Deerfield and Highland Park High Schools play football.

The annual rivalry for the Shields Trophy between the Warriors and Giants takes place at 7 p.m. Friday at Wolters Field in Highland Park. The game is the Central Suburban League North Division opener for both teams.

The game takes on added significance for the seniors. Deerfield has won the last three years with the Warriors wanting to maintain the tradition and Giants hoping to change it.

“Our seniors have not beat Deerfield in their high school career so I don’t have to spend a lot of time talking about motivation or playing hard this week,” Highland Park Hal Chiodo said.

Deerfield Coach Steve Winiecki knows his players will be ready too. “This intradistrict rivalry game always brings out the best in both programs,” he said. “It will be a great way to start the CLS North season.”

Farmers’ Market Celebrates Autumn

When the Deerfield Farmers’ Market opens from 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday it will be for the annual Harvest Fest featuring the apple pie baking contest.
