Another reason to avoid Ravinia. It used to be arrive early, get a good spot and have a nice time.Read More Lately, it's become competitive to get a decent spot and the elbows are flying by people who want to reserve a half acre for their little get together. Now, we have to expect these $185 'prime' spots will get us even further from the stage that we can't even see. People taking the train from Chicago for the first time are always amazed that their lawn seats don't even have a view of the stage. I'll never understand. Grab a picnic basket and go to the beach with a decent iPod player...you'll have a better time than 'lawn seats' at Ravinia. If you don't have Pavilion seats, don't waste your money or peace of mind.

Sounds like a great idea...maybe it will keep me away from the plebians that commented above withRead More the negative vibes.

The cachet of the lawn at Ravinia was its' egalitarian nature. This subverts the idea of the areaRead More being open to everyone at modest cost. Those who wish to have a more comfortable experience can buy tickets.

Statement from Chicago Mayor Rham Emanuel: “Our whole city learned with sadness today of theRead More passing of Roger Ebert, whose name was synonymous with two things: the movies and Chicago. In a Pulitzer Prize-winning career that spanned more than four decades, thousands of reviews and countless acts of generosity to others, Roger championed Chicago as a center for filmmaking and critiques. With a knowledge of his subject as deep as his love for his wife Chaz, Roger Ebert will be remembered for the strength of his work, respected for his courage in the face of illness, and revered for his contribution to filmmaking and to our city. The final reel of his life may have run through to the end, but his memory will never fade.” http://www.suntimes.com/news/19276180-418/chicago-nation-reacts-to-passing-of-roger-ebert.html

Illinois Govenor Pat Quinn: “I was very saddened to hear today that my good friend RogerRead More Ebert has passed away. I – along with the people of Illinois – offer condolences to his wife Chaz, with whom I had the privilege of spending some time just last week. Even in recent years when illness robbed him of his ability to speak, the mere act of raising his thumb brought auditoriums full of people to their feet in applause. One of my best memories was getting a ‘thumbs-up’ from Roger in 2011 when I proclaimed ‘Roger Ebert Day’ at Ebertfest in Champaign. Roger Ebert was Everyman with a cinematographer’s eye and an artist’s passion. His unique gift was the ability to communicate with everyday people about all kinds of movies and ultimately, the real values of life. He was one of our best-known and most respected journalists, a winner of the Pulitzer Prize as a Chicago Sun-Times film critic, and a proud and generous graduate of the University of Illinois where he began his journalism career at the Daily Illini." http://www.suntimes.com/news/19276180-418/chicago-nation-reacts-to-passing-of-roger-ebert.html

I can say this, if Roger Ebert gave a movie thumbs down, I went to see it. Only because I was aRead More young wipper snapper. In my ripe age of 40 (or 39 something) I will truly miss a Chicago icon such as him. Every time I would watch Gene and Roger I felt I was with them at the Highland Park movie theater. Thanks for the great memories! My condolences to his family, friends, and fans:( :)

A year ago, Jackie Evancho appeared. This year...not? What happened. Her CDs sell in the millions.Read More She has appeared in Japan twice, in Russia, sang for the President, been on every talk show and sang. Why not this year? Did her family say no? I'll bet no one connect\ed to Ravinia speaks to this Question.

Too bad there need to be renovations at the Renaissance but that is what it is. That said, for thoseRead More who love film, it is the only theater around here with movies that aren't all mainstream and aimed at kids and adults from 4 to 40. If it would be possible for Deerbrook to host Renaissance for 3 months, that would be great. It doesn't seem that Deerfield has made any definitive decisions at this point anyway and it isn't likely that demolition and building would begin within the next 4 months anyway. If they don't relocate temporarily, we'll just go to Evanston or Glanview,!
Hilary Elizabeth Winiarz February 25, 2013 at 04:41 pm
I do think Deerbrook is a bit cursed, but I can't help but think that nostalgia alone would bringRead More people in to a renovated Deerbrook Movie Theatre, regardless of what name it's under. I'd imagine that all kinds of code for the long abandoned place will have to be addressed, but I really would support a renovated theatre there.
A concerned DHS Parent February 25, 2013 at 06:06 pm
Seriously. It would take longer to get the Deerbrook theaters ready for occupancy than theRead More remodeling on the HP theaters is going to take. The Deerbrook theaters have been empty for 5,10 or more years?
