Updated: Sheriff's Deputy Charged with Sex Crime

Deputy Eric Francke is on administrative leave without pay after being charged with solicitation of a sex act and obstructing justice.

A Lake County Sheriff's deputy has been placed on administrative leave after being charged May 10 with solicitation of a sexual act and obstructing justice, according to a press release. Deputy Eric Francke, 33, has been a deputy with the sheriff's office since Sept. 2008. He is currently assigned to the Criminal Investigations Division. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office was notified by the Mundelein Police Department on April 11 of an on-going criminal investigation involving Francke, who was initially placed on administrative leave with pay. As of Monday, Francke was not receiving pay. Francke is free after posting 10 percent of a $10,000 bond. Three Ejected From Van During Crash

Five people sent to hospital after Tollway collision in Lake Forest.

Five people were injured in a three-vehicle collision including a tractor-trailer on the Tri-State Tollway near Highway 60 in Lake Forest today, according to the Illinois State Police. Though three people were ejected from one of the vehicles, a van, none of the injuries were severe. “At first we thought the injuries were serious,” Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Pete Howe said. “That turned out not to be the case. None were life threatening.” The van was heading eastbound on Interstate 94 toward Chicago when it lost control, swerved across all lanes of traffic and was struck in the rear by the truck, according to Howe. Car Damage Leads to DUI, Drug Arrest

DUI, Drugs and more  Samuel Kim, 24, of Wheeling was arrested May 1 for DUI drugs, possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving with one headlight, according to Deerfield Police reports.  Police spotted Kim driving in the vicinity of Lake Cook Road and Corporate Drive with only one headlight illuminated and “extensive front end damage which appeared to be fresh,” according to the report. After stopping him, police observed his “reactions seemed low” and the “heavy masking odor of air freshener was coming from the vehicle.”  After further investigation, police learned Kim had three arrests for charges including drugs, liquor and theft, according to the report. Regional Police Report: Woman Charged in Murder; Bank Robbery Shootout Leaves One Dead

Inverness Woman Charged in Decades Old Murder Former Inverness resident Jacquelyn Greco, 66, was charged with arranging the murder of her husband in 1979. Greco, of Crystal Falls, Michigan was charged with first degree murder of her husband, Carl Gaimari. Police said Greco was having an affair and planned her husband's death. Police said that Greco had a burglary staged. On April 30, 1979, two men entered the residence and stated they were robbing the home. Police said the two men ordered Greco and the couple's three children – ages 13, 5, and 2 – into a bedroom, tied them up and locked them in a closet. Before they closed the closet door, the men took a box off of a top shelf that contained two handguns owned by Gaimari. Police said that …

Group Demands Firing of Ex-Priest, Now Counselor, Accused of Sex Abuse

The Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests called on the Archdiocese of Chicago Thursday to take action against ex-priest Russell L. Romano.

Members of SNAP—Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests—want Russell L. Romano to be fired.  Romano, who currently lives in Bolingbrook, works as a counselor for Advocate Health Care in the Illinois Professional Heath Program in Des Plaines, according to SNAP. He is listed on the Archdiocese of Chicago website as a priest with "substantiated allegations of sexual misconduct with minors."  Romano was ordained in 1973 and laicized in May 2009, according to the site. In July 2009, it was revealed that Romano left the church in 1991 after three boys reported abuse, according to ABC. Romano was then serving at St. Barbara's in Brookfield. I am uncertain if a recovered alcoholic should ever be a bartender or whether someone who apparently has had inappropriate sexual conduct with children should ever be placed in a position of authority with kids. Drivers warned to buckle up or risk getting a ticket as police step up seat belt enforcement through Memorial Day.

The 2013 Click It or Ticket campaign kicked off Friday in Illinois. The purpose of the campaign is to help save lives by cracking down on those who do not buckle up through the Memorial Day holiday weekend. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is joining the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), the Illinois State Police (ISP) and over 500 local law enforcement agencies across the state to save more lives by strongly enforcing seat belt laws. “As we kick-off the busy summer driving season it’s important for everyone to buckle up every trip, every time, day or night – no excuses,” said Sheriff Mark C. Former Deerfield Woman Charged with Animal Cruelty Checks into Psych Ward

Debra Jaffe's arraignment has been postponed to May 22.

A former Deerfield woman checked herself into a psychiatric hospital Tuesday, just one day before she was scheduled for arraignment on animal cruelty charges, the Niles Herald-Advocate reports. Debra Jaffe, 42, of Niles, was indicted April 24 by a Lake County Grand Jury for aggravated cruelty to animals, a Class 4 Felony, reported Patch. Jaffe is charged with leaving two dogs in a Deerfield home without any food or water for two weeks. When police discovered the animals in the home on Nov. 1, they found one Westie named Joey had died of starvation, the Daily Herald reports. The second dog, another Westie named Sydnee, was malnourished and covered in feces. The dog was able to recover from the ordeal at an animal hospital. Jaffe’s …

Police Arrest Woman for Theft

The following arrest information was supplied by the Deerfield Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

Theft  Renee Redmond, 54, of Evanston was arrested April 26 for theft, according to Deerfield Police reports. Police were called to Whole Foods by security personnel after observing Redmond walk out of the store with four items in her purse. She “admitted (to police) to stealing from whole foods.” She was released on bond and will appear in Lake County Court at 3:30 p.m. June 4.  Vandalism  “Indiscernible graffiti” was sprayed on a half wall inside the skate bowl at Jewett Park May 1, according to Deerfield Police reports. Person Offering Deerfield Teen Ride Was Not a Stranger

Deerfield children learn how to react when they encounter an unfamiliar person.

Poor weather conditions may have led a Deerfield teenager to refuse a ride home from school Thursday from a person who knew the student, according to a statement from Deerfield Police Chief John Sliozis. After investigating the incident, Deerfield police concluded the person offering the ride was an acquaintance of the teenager, according to Sliozis. “The child … failed to recognize the person because of weather and lighting conditions,” he said.
