Warriors Win First Ever Regional Crown

Deerfield girls’ soccer team blanks Vernon Hills for title as Warriors go undefeated at home this year.

Deerfield High School’s girls’ soccer team completed an undefeated home season at Adams Field Friday night going unscored upon throughout its own Regional by defeating Vernon Hills, 2-0, for the title. The Warriors made it 8-0-5 for the year at home and 12-4-8 so far this year overall by taking the school’s first ever girls’ regional soccer crown. A 5-0 semifinal win Wednesday over Von Steuben left Deerfield unscored upon in league play. The team has yielded only six goals at home all year. The teams were scoreless for the first 32 minutes when one of the Cougars touched the ball with her hand near the goal. Walden 4th Grader Wins Park District Chess Tournament

Jonah Winter takes first place in competition between grades four through eight.

When it comes to chess, Walden Elementary School fourth grader Jonah Winter does not let his elders scare him. Winter won the overall first place award May 12 at the Deerfield Park District’s chess tournament coming out ahead of all players in grades four through eight. The top team at the tourney was the contingent from South Park Elementary School of Danica Sun, Ethan Lesser, Patrick Carrow, Eric Rosenson, Purvendra Bhatt and Joshua Rosenson. Carrow also took the championship trophy among the third graders and Rosenson did the same in the fifth grade grouping. Boys’ Lacrosse Team Edges Hoffman Estates

Volleyball squad upends Maine East, girls’ lacrosse unit ends season with loss.

8 Warriors Qualify for State Track Meet

Katz, Rabushka, Williams and Middlebrook will compete in two events each.

May 17  Boys’ Track  The Final Score:        Deerfield finished fifth out of 16 teams at the Sectional Meet with 51.5 points.  Warriors Star Performers:  Danny Katz, Adam Rabushka, Luke Williams and Donald Middlebrook will compete in two events at the State Meet. Katz took second in the 110-meter high hurdles and joined Middlebrook, Williams and Geoff Heiser to place fourth in the 4x200 relay. Rabushka grabbed second in the 300 intermediate hurdles and was part of the quartet of Williams, Middlebrook and Tristan Nunez who ended up fifth in the 4x400 relay.  Other Notable Warrior Performances:       Makoto Bowering was fourth in the 800 while Alex Gold finished fifth in the 3,200.  Who’s Next:   The eight Warriors will compete in the State …

Deerfield Celebrates 50 Years of Shepard

Open house Sunday culminates year-long celebration of middle school’s founding.

Three of the four principals who have been stewards of Shepard Middle School will help cap a year-long celebration of 50 years of Spartan spirit with an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday starting in the library. Shepard opened its doors in 1961 as Alan B. Shepard Junior High and the community has been doing things all year to commemorate the school’s history. Earlier in 1961, Shepard was the first American astronaut to travel into space. May 17  Soccer  The Final Score:        Deerfield 5, Von Steuben 0.  Warriors Star Performers:  Amanda Imyak scored two goals and added an assist while Logan Just put the ball in the net once and assisted on two other scores.  Other Notable Warrior Performances:       Claire Mulert had a pair of assists. Emily Kellow and Leah Heller each scored a goal while both Amanda Kellow and Hannah Rosen chipped in with an assist. 113 Keeping Community Survey Data Under Wraps

Administration continues to defend denial of FOIA requests for information.

Township High School District 113 has erected a stone wall around the raw data to a survey released in March that measured community interest and opinion in capital improvements to Deerfield and Highland Park High Schools. After a $133 million referendum for improvements at the two schools was defeated a year ago, the District reached out to members of the community to seek input and guidance before developing a new plan. Earlier: Community Joins 113 Effort in Force Patch and at least three others made requests under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) for the raw data used to create the marketing committee's report on the survey. DI Helps Turn South Park and Wilmot Into Caruso

Teams join DestiNation Imagination competition and make new friends from different Deerfield schools.

DestiNation Imagination is one of the ingredients which turn two student bodies—South Park Elementary School and Wilmot Elementary School—into the Caruso Middle School student body. When Frown Is a Four Letter Word became a team in October, Sakina Naqvi, Sarah Solovy, Maddie Thall and Alison Wexler did not know each other that well. They were adjusting to a new life at Caruso after completing their work the year before at South Park and Caruso. Warrior Volleyball Team Tops Maine West

Deerfield improves its record to 16-13 for season.

May 15  Volleyball  The Final Score:        Deerfield defeated Maine West, 25-22, 25-20.  Warriors Star Performers:  Kenison Ready spiked 10 kills and blocked a shot. Scott Laner had 12 assists and a pair of aces.  Other Notable Warrior Performances:       Andrew Hector chipped in six kills and two blocks while Grayson Peacock contributed three kills and a pair of blocks. Matthew Dlugie killed three balls for points and blocked a shot. Jordan Fine had nine assists. Ross Lehrman added eight digs and an ace.  Who’s Next:   The Warriors travel to Maine East at 6 p.m. Thursday. The Bottom Line:      Deerfield improved its season record to 16-13.

Why Wait for Graduation in May?

Cassidy Rappaport gets her diploma May 29 after teaching in Asia since graduating in January.

When Cassidy Rappaport receives her diploma from Deerfield High School May 29, she will have been a graduate of the school for more than four months. Rappaport was one of seven students to earn her diploma in January. While her classmates were studying things like math, English, science and social studies, she was teaching in Thailand, Burma and India. “I planned it,” Rappaport said. “I wanted to do a gap year so I met with my counselors at the start of my junior year so I had one and a half years to plan it.” She scheduled the necessary courses to earn enough credit to graduate a semester early. Not a stranger to Asia when she arrived in January, Rappaport began to develop a passion for human rights and the plight of refugees three years …
