No member of Congress has ever called Deerfield home. No state senator has hailed from Deerfield in more than 40 years. By early January, the Village will be able to claim Rep. Elect Brad Schneider (D-Deerfield) and state Sen. Elect Julie Morrison (D-Deerfield). Victories by Schneider and Morrison were two of the significant outcomes from a night of election returns from the reelection of President Barack Obama to Congressional campaigns, Illinois General Assembly contests and county races. After more than a year of campaigning and millions of dollars spent, the voters of the 10th Congressional District will decide today if Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) will continue to represent them or the job will go to Democratic Challenger Brad Schneider of Deerfield. Voters will also choose the whether West Deerfield Township Supervisor Julie Morrison, a Democrat, or Republican Highland Park pediatrician Arie Friedman will succeed retiring state Sen. Deerfield was a hub of activity Wednesday for the two candidates who hope to succeed retiring state Sen. Susan Garrett (D-Lake Forest). Both the Republican candidate, Highland Park pediatrician Arie Friedman, and his Democratic opponent, West Deerfield Township Supervisor Julie Morrison, were in the Village. Earlier: Morrison, Friedman Intensify Attacks Morrison did herself some concrete good. She voted. When asked who she voted for, she answered with a smile. She does like the idea of early voting and hopes to see it expanded. “I’ll be very busy election day talking to voters so I decided to vote today,” Morrison said. “Early voting is a great idea. With the Nov. 6 general election nine days away and early voting into its second week, candidates for the United States Congress and the Illinois State Senate spent the weekend meeting voters and encouraging people to cast ballots. If Brad Schneider and Julie Morrison win their respective races in the Nov. 6, it will be the first time Deerfield has ever had both a state and federal government representative at the same time.
"That is so cool," were the words coming out of my 11-year old daughter's mouth. I had just told her that if both Julie Morrison and Brad Schneider win their respective races in two weeks, Deerfield will have two current residents representing us in the Illinois State Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives. Very cool. This has never happened before. The last time Deerfield had any state or federal representation goes back to two men and several decades: Karl Berning and Daniel Walker. Berning was in the Illinois State Senate from 1966-1983 and remained a Deerfield resident until he retired from the Senate in 1983. Voters who want to get a close personal look at Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) and his Democratic opponent, Brad Schneider of Deerfield, debating will get their only chance at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in the Lake Forest High School east campus auditorium. Candidates answer questions at Sunday forum in Lake Bluff.
The 29th Senate District, which encompasses Deerfield, Highland Park, Glencoe, Glenview, Lake Forest, Lake Bluff, Niles and Northbrook, has a choice in the March 20 primary between two Democratic candidates: the current Deerfield Township supervisor and a Lake Bluff business consultant with a business, finance and governmental background. Julie Morrison, of Deerfield, has been the West Deerfield Township supervisor for 15 years. She received the endorsement of the person currently holding the office, Susan Garrett, who announced her retirement in July.
