Relay For Life Heats Up This Week

Fundraiser set Monday; Paint the Town Purple slated Saturday.

The Deerfield-Highland Park Relay For Life is less than a month away and two events to raise money and create awareness will take place this week. The Relay is scheduled from 6 p.m. June 7 to 6 a.m. June 8 at the Deerfield High School’s Adams Field track. An all you can eat fundraiser will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Italian Kitchen with 100 percent of the proceeds going to Relay For Life. The event was organized by Michel and Angela Butera who are honoring his mother, Joan Butera, who died 10 years ago from cancer. “Our goal is to encourage community members to join forces and help celebrate more birthdays,” Angela Butera said. “We have all been touched by cancer in one form or another.” The other event is Paint the Town …

Relay For Life Plans Open House

Deerfield-Highland Park Relay for Life kicks off 2013 effort Wednesday.

An open house for the Deerfield Highland Park Relay For Life from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Trax Tavern and Grill in Deerfield will let the public know the plans for annual all night event, according to a release from the American Cancer Society. The annual event will take place from 6 p.m. June 7 through 6 a.m. June 8 at Deerfield High School’s Adams Field. The local planning committee has set a $100,000 fundraising goal. Community members can learn more about the American Cancer Society, survivor recognition, luminaria, advocacy and sponsorship during the open house as well as enjoy pizza and drinks courtesy of Trax, according to the release. Help Plan Relay For Life Wednesday

Initial planning meeting for annual American Cancer Society event set at 6 p.m. at Village Hall.

Planning for the annual Deerfield-Highland Park Relay for Life begins with an initial planning meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Deerfield’s Village Hall. The event is a major activity of the American Cancer Society. Individuals are needed to help with logistics, entertainment, team recruitment, survivor and caregiver activities, securing community support, food and prizes. This year’s event is chaired by Assistant Deerfield Village Manager Jenny Maltas. Relay For Life Spawns Hope

Hundreds circle Adams Field track Saturday to raise awareness of cancer and money to fight it.

Circling the Adams Field track with a message of hope, more than 300 people participated in the annual Deerfield-Highland Park Relay For Life Saturday at Deerfield High School. The event is a major fundraising and awareness event sponsored by the American Cancer Society. Donna Lee Caringella of Highland Park told the crowd at the opening ceremonies about her diagnosis just under two years ago and how she is now in remission. Deerfield’s Janet Goldberg talked to Patch about her 13-year battle with the disease. “When something stops working my doctor tells me about something new to try,” Goldberg said of her survival for seven years with Stage 4 Cancer. Relay for Life Planning Begins

Two events set next month to draw community interest.

Planning for the American Cancer Society’s Deerfield-Highland Park Relay for Life June 9 and 10 at the Deerfield High School track began in earnest Wednesday with a meeting of interested volunteers at Deerfield Village Hall. The actual event begins at 6 p.m. June 9 and lasts until 6 a.m. the following morning as relay teams walk or run around the 400-meter track all night to raise money to fight cancer, according to spokesperson Janet Pacanowski. Two initial kick off events are planned, one for the young people of Deerfield and Highland Park at 6 p.m. Feb. 18 at NovaHP. Mayor Proclaims Relay for Life Days

Village recognizes significance of cancer fundraiser.

Mayor Harriet Rosenthal proclaimed Relay for Life days in Deerfield during Monday’s night’s village board meeting. The proclamation comes just days before the American Cancer Society’s annual event in Highland Park and Deerfield kicks off this weekend. This year the overnight fundraiser is being held at Wolters Field in Highland Park. According to event organizers, “Teams of local businesses, schools, churches, community groups and families raise funds - prior to and at the event - to help fund support services for area patients and their families, cancer research, community educational programs and advocacy initiatives.” Those teams will be participating in a relay from 6 p.m. on Saturday to 6 a.m. on Sunday. “I’ve gotten to a point where…
