Deerfield will honor its military veterans with its annual Veterans Day observation at 11 a.m. Sunday by the flagpole at the southwest corner of Jewett Park sponsored by the American Legion Post 738. A highlight of the ceremony will be a talk by Joe Pugiliese, a Navy veteran of World War II and Korea, describing his recent trip to Washington, D.C., where he was one of 90 people to visit the nation’s memorials on the Capitol Mall for World War II, Korea and Viet Nam. After the Cub Scouts lead the Pledge of Allegiance, American Legion Post Commander John Coughenour will preside over the event. Mayor Harriet Rosenthal, Women’s Auxiliary President Joann Harrison and Frank Haney of the Sons of the American Legion will participate. Post Chaplain…

Editor’s Note—John Reid is the senior vice commander of the Deerfield American Legion. What does Memorial Day mean to me? As an army veteran of Viet Nam, it has a great deal of significance. After the end of the Civil War, towns and cities all over our country, both in the North and the South, were conducting memorial services to honor those who had died in that war. In May of 1868, the national commander of The Grand Army of the Republic declared Decoration Day, as it was called then, a national holiday. After World War I, the holiday was expanded to include all who had died fighting in any war. Today honoring those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country is still the reason we celebrate Memorial Day. It seems, however, that …

Editor’s Note—Joann Harrison is the President of the Deerfield American Legion Women’s Auxiliary. Dear Editor: Every time I hear someone say "Happy Memorial Day" I wonder what they mean. I always thought that Memorial Day was a solemn day of remembrance to be "observed", not "celebrated." My dad was in the Army Air Corp in WWI. My older brother was in the Navy in WWII and had two ships shot out from under him. Two of my cousins were in the Army and one was in the Navy. One of my sons was in the Army in the 1990's. The son of one of those previously mentioned cousins is now on his second tour of Afghanistan and did two tours of Iraq.
