The windy but mild breezes Sunday blew off caps and sent flags flapping but did not discourage Deerfield’s vets from celebrating their national holiday, Veterans Day. In ceremonies at the Veterans Memorial in Jewett Park, Mayor Harriet Rosenthal thanked the local veterans of American Legion Post 738 for their service, both in war and peace. Deerfield will honor its military veterans with its annual Veterans Day observation at 11 a.m. Sunday by the flagpole at the southwest corner of Jewett Park sponsored by the American Legion Post 738. A highlight of the ceremony will be a talk by Joe Pugiliese, a Navy veteran of World War II and Korea, describing his recent trip to Washington, D.C., where he was one of 90 people to visit the nation’s memorials on the Capitol Mall for World War II, Korea and Viet Nam. After the Cub Scouts lead the Pledge of Allegiance, American Legion Post Commander John Coughenour will preside over the event.
