No member of Congress has ever called Deerfield home. No state senator has hailed from Deerfield in more than 40 years. By early January, the Village will be able to claim Rep. Elect Brad Schneider (D-Deerfield) and state Sen. Elect Julie Morrison (D-Deerfield). Victories by Schneider and Morrison were two of the significant outcomes from a night of election returns from the reelection of President Barack Obama to Congressional campaigns, Illinois General Assembly contests and county races. Deerfield was a hub of activity Wednesday for the two candidates who hope to succeed retiring state Sen. Susan Garrett (D-Lake Forest). Both the Republican candidate, Highland Park pediatrician Arie Friedman, and his Democratic opponent, West Deerfield Township Supervisor Julie Morrison, were in the Village. Earlier: Morrison, Friedman Intensify Attacks Morrison did herself some concrete good. She voted. When asked who she voted for, she answered with a smile. She does like the idea of early voting and hopes to see it expanded. “I’ll be very busy election day talking to voters so I decided to vote today,” Morrison said. “Early voting is a great idea. With the Nov. 6 general election nine days away and early voting into its second week, candidates for the United States Congress and the Illinois State Senate spent the weekend meeting voters and encouraging people to cast ballots. West Deerfield Township Supervisor Julie Morrison was endorsed Wednesday by former Rep. John Porter (R-Wilmette) while Highland Park pediatrician Arie Friedman got the backing of Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Highland Park) in their race to succeed retiring state Sen. Susan Garrett (D-Lake Forest). Porter represented the 10th Congressional District from 1980 until he retired in 2000 when he was succeeded by Kirk, who held the post until he was elected to the United States Senate in 2010. Democratic candidate Scott Drury and Republican candidate Mark Shaw traded charges of dishonest campaigning and offensive attacks during a Patch-sponsored debate on Sunday.
The candidates for 58th District State Representative exchanged verbal barbs with one another about their campaigns, positions and integrity during a debate Sunday in Lake Forest. Republican candidate Mark Shaw frequently said that Democratic candidate Scott Drury "has been bought and paid for by Mike Madigan," the Illinois House Speaker. "He's received tens of thousands of dollars to be elected by Mr. Madigan," Shaw, a criminal defense attorney, said in a forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters, Patch and the Union League Club of Chicago.
